Jesus calls Himself the true vine. The imagery of the vine is often associated with Israel in the Old Testament, frequently with negative connotations or implications. Israel has not borne any fruit; instead, they have failed to do so because of their unbelief. By calling Himself the true vine, Jesus claims the title of true Israel, who alone meets God's desire for true fruit, namely righteousness. Therefore, Israel is no longer based on ethnicity (i.e., being a descendant of Abraham) or the land of Israel itself. It is now based on Jesus Christ, and being part of Him, i.e., the "vine", depends on faith in Him.

In 2 Corinthians 12:10, "delight" does not mean taking pleasure in pain or suffering itself, but rather finding joy and contentment in the midst of weaknesses, hardships, and difficulties because they serve a greater purpose in Christ. It reflects a deep trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing that these struggles allow His power to be displayed in your life. To delight in weaknesses means to willingly accept them, not with despair, but with faith that God is working through them to strengthen you spiritually and draw you closer to Him. It is a joyful surrender, recognizing that when you are weak, Christ’s strength is made perfect in you.

Suffering can be a tool for gaining wisdom, as seen in 2 Corinthians 12:7b-9a, where Paul acknowledges that his "thorn in the flesh" was given to keep him from pride and to draw him closer to God. Though he pleaded for its removal, God responded, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This teaches us that suffering humbles us, deepens our dependence on God, and reveals His sustaining grace. True wisdom comes not from escaping hardship but from learning to trust God in it, knowing that His strength is revealed in our weakness.
