To get ahead of the July 1 implementation of the Work and Family Mobility Act, the RMV is adding more staff and extending hours to handle what they expect to be a flood of new applicants for driver’s licenses. Under the new law, applicants will only have to provide two forms of identity, such as a foreign passport and birth certificate or a passport and marriage certificate. Opponents have expressed concerns that allowing the undocumented to obtain these privileges reserved for U.S. citizens only encourages others to follow suit, also warning that undocumented immigrants might illegally use a driver’s license to vote.
