⏱️ Episode Length: 60+ minutes
Why do the poor pay extremely high interest rates?
Why does microcredit help, but not transform lives?
And why do so many small businesses remain painfully small?
In this episode of Poor Economics, we explore lending, saving, and entrepreneurship through Chapters 7, 8, and 9. We move beyond simple stories of greedy moneylenders or heroic entrepreneurs and examine the real constraints the poor face.
We see why high interest rates often reflect high transaction and monitoring costs rather than pure exploitation. We learn why microfinance improves flexibility but does not trigger large social transformations. We uncover why saving is so hard even for disciplined households, and why unfinished houses, ROSCAs, and fertilizer vouchers act as powerful commitment devices.
Finally, we challenge the myth of the natural-born poor entrepreneur. Most businesses remain small not because of a lack of effort, but because crossing the hump to scale requires capital, skills, and stability that are out of reach. What the poor want most is not risk, but security and a steady job.
🎯 You’ll learn:
Why small loans carry high interest rates
What microcredit can and cannot do
Why saving is a self-control problem
Why entrepreneurship is often a last resort
Why reducing risk is central to escaping poverty
