University of Canterbury chemical and process engineer - Professor Matthew Watson - isn't your typical academic. Matthew has helped launch three deep-tech companies from scientific research, with a fourth now in development. Those ventures span everything from turning waste plastics into safer wood glues, to producing low-emissions iron using hydrogen. Collectively they've raised tens of millions of dollars and now... earnt Matthew a nomination at this year's KiwiNet Research Commercialisation Awards.

Last year, for the first time in New Zealand, MedSafe gave approval to prescribe psilocybin - the hallucinogenic compound found in magic mushrooms. The approval was specific to one psychiatrist and gave them the authority to prescribe and administer psilocybin to any patient they have assessed and diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression. According to Health NZ there is work underway to make it easier for more healthcare practitioners to take on this work. This weekend the 'Auckland Mushroom Festival' is taking place along Karangahape Road, and our next guest will be speaking at the event. University of Auckland doctoral student Sam Lasham researches prohibited drug use and policy, harm reduction, and psychedelics. He chats to Jesse.

This is the story of a Wellington second hand bookstore called Bookhaven. It started getting orders that looked a lot like a shaggy dog story. A Canadian buyer was sending multiple book orders, sometimes minutes apart, for niche texts from the 80s on NZ-specific subjects. With a bit of sleuthing Bookhaven owner Annemarie Thorby reached the conclusion her store had been caught up in the global machinations of AI giants training their large language models, and sometimes destroying the books in the process. Annemarie Thorby spoke to Guyon Espiner.
