Peeni Henare is a grandson of Sir James Henare, the last commanding officer of the Maori Battalion in World War Two whose leadership during war and in peacetime still carries significant weight today. Peeni inherited that leadership mantle, holding many portfolios in the last Labour led Government including as Minister of Defence, before announcing his retirement from politics earlier this year.
