An eye-opening account of a young pilots path to becoming a Top-Cat carrier fighter pilot!
I loved this account of the process involved with becoming a naval aviator, especially knowing is was written by a person who relates many of his personal experiences. As a retired navel officer and carrier fighter pilot, William H. Labarge writes with authority and knowledge, giving the book a realism that is not present in many military novels.
I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys books about military situations, especially to young people who might be considering Navel Aviation as a career. Mr. Labarge tells it "as it is", the excitement and adventure, as well as the "down and dirty" aspects of flying fighters, including emergency landings, or what happens when you have diarrhea at 25000 feet!
Great book
I always have enjoyed reading how the Navy trains it's pilots and this book really did a great job. I highly recommend it
Page-turning action turns a young man into a fighter pilot
It is always far more than training that develops the skills of a navy pilot to take off and land on the deck of a carrier in the midst of a storm at night. This is a beautifully written overview of the things that bring out the best. The skills, friendships, teamwork and sheer nerve to strap on tons of high velocity steel and electronics and make it move as needed are nearly overwhelming. A grand read and well worth the time.
A Tough Road to become a Naval Aviator
Excellent book on what it takes to become a naval aviator, especially good with the details on the amount of time, study, and absolute determination to succeed that is required. If you liked "An Officer and a Gentlemen" then you'll love this book. The author was apparently a consultant on "Top Gun". Well written, although a little slow in spots, the ending was terrific. I recommend.
Good read
I enjoyed this book because it is very easy to follow. Every thing is good and I was on this ship.
