Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

Description

As every past generation has had to disenthrall itself from an inheritance of truisms and stereotypes, so in our own time we must move on from the reassuring repetition of stale phrases to a new, difficult, but essential confrontation with reality.

For the great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie—deliberate, contrived, and dishonest—but the myth—persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

Mythology distracts us everywhere—in government as in business, in politics as in economics, in foreign affairs as in domestic affairs. But today I want to particularly consider the myth and reality in our national economy.

President John F. Kennedy, Yale University Commencement (June 11, 1962)

Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.

George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949)

Who knows only his own generation remains always a child.

George Norlin, paraphrasing Marcus Tullius Cicero‘s (106-43 BCE) Orator (46 BCE), chapter XXXIV [section 120]: “Nescire autem quid ante quam natus sis acciderit, id est semper esse puerum.” Which translated, reads: “To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.”

This is a special time for many Christian folks, Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, and so forth. But you wouldn’t know it by the headlines. What you do see, today for instance, during this final week of Lent, with Passover right around the corner, is the celebration of World Health Day. William Haseltine knows it’s World Health Day, and even the UN knows that Good Friday is coming up. And then of course, ten days after Easter, we can all look forward to Earth Day. To understand Earth Day, just ask Gorbie. Speaking of which, I posted an article in yesterday’s archive about dear old Gorbie. To understand the dark history and purpose of Earth Day, consult Gary Kah for instance.
