He said that, at a luncheon held on Hitler's birthday in 1942, Göring said, "The only one who really knows about the Reichstag is I, because I set it on fire!" In his own Nuremberg testimony, Göring denied this story."

Revisiting yesterday's Memorial Day discussion, I ask; since we are encouraged remember and honor those who died while serving in the country's armed forces, how best can we remember them and honor their memory? The answer, to me, seems simple.

Revisiting and focusing on yesterday's subject of Memorial Day, the National Moment of Remembrance Act in 2000 specifically encourages us to pause for one minute in a symbolic act of unity to “remember and honor the men and women of the United States who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace.” So, since we are encouraged remember and honor the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces, the question naturally arises; how best can we remember them and honor their memory? The answer seems simple; by having an honest, in-depth conversation about the reality of their conscription, service, and unfortunate, untimely, and arguably needless death.

With this in mind, I wonder; does it make me 'unpatriotic' to question conflicts which benefit and enrich but a small few, while impoverishing and decimating an untold many? I don't think so.

On this Memorial Day, let us offer deep introspection and honest reflection, both to remember and honor those who died while serving in the country's armed forces, and for posterity's sake.

Today is Memorial Day, and as such, the National Moment of Remembrance Act in 2000 specifically encourages us to pause for one minute in a symbolic act of unity to “remember and honor the men and women of the United States who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace.” But if we ignore or conveniently forget the severe lessons of history, aren't we effectively dishonoring their memory?

I offer up these valuable and timeless milestones of American history, so that we may avoid the danger of feigned patriotism in a cowardly turning away from the hard truths and reality of conflict, and honestly reflect on what is arguably the senseless loss of life.
