Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade earlier this summer, the nation has been left with an uneven patchwork of abortion laws across the states. In some states like Wisconsin, people seeking an abortion have to cross state lines and navigate an increasingly confusing legal and medical landscape to get the reproductive care they need.

Abortion advocates like Robin Marty saw this coming from a mile away. She first wrote her Handbook for a Post-Roe America in 2019, with a revised edition published in 2021. Both are a comprehensive guide of policy, resources, and practical information for anyone who may need to seek an abortion.

For today’s show, WORT news director Chali Pittman sits down with Robin Marty to talk about writing the handbook, what it was like preparing for this moment in abortion history, what’s at stake in the upcoming midterm elections, and more.

Robin Marty is director of operations for the West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Previously, she was the senior political reporter for Rewire News, a reproductive health and justice news site, where she covered state-based abortion bans and other assaults on reproductive rights. She is the author of Crow After Roe: How “Separate But Equal” Has Become the New Standard In Women’s Health and How We Can Change That (Ig Publishing, 2013) and The New Handbook for a Post-Roe America: The Complete Guide to Abortion Legality, Access, and Practical Support (Seven Stories Press, 2021).
