Shake hands with Van Halen. It is pretty much a miracle that there is a new Van Halen record out in general let alone one that features Diamond David Lee Roth on lead vocals. So in light of all of this, I decided to do yet another artist focus episode but this time for the mighty Van Halen and their entire history and family tree that goes with them. I hope you like it! Re-recordings of songs that do not suck or offend. In light of the Scorpions new album called ‘Comeblack’ which is half covers and half re-recorded hits, it got me thinking whether or not there were other examples of this which I actually liked. I was very surprised to find out that there are exceptions to my ‘all re-recordings suck and are unnecessary’ rule, who knew? So join me as I focus on a musical topic which is damn near impossible to defend and check out bands and singers who have gone into the studio with the sheer intention of rewriting history and yet they didn’t tarnish it either.

Some of my favorite b-sides of all time. Thanks to listener Travis for the theme request this time around. YOU could be the next listener that gets your theme idea on the show so send in those emails! It seems like import singles and just b-sides in general are not really out there anymore but there is a whole slew of these awesome little orphans in the 60 plus years of rock and roll so join me for an hour as a spotlight some of my all time favorite songs that exist on the flipside.

He may not have started it but he damn sure perfected it. Here is the Rock Strikes Ten tribute show to Elvis Presley. On this episode you will find songs by the king himself as well as other artists paying tribute to him through cover versions as well as their own originals. Even if you are not a super Elvis fan, I think you will find stuff on here to enjoy.

My favorite albums of 2011. This is the Rock Strikes Ten debut of the ‘C’ in CNJRadio. The records I chose for this show is the list as of air time on New Year’s Day and I had a list with about 15 more records that I enjoyed quite a lot this year but I ultimately decided on playing these particular albums. I hope you are not bummed that I didn’t rank any of them except for the top two. Perhaps a familiar voice will make things up to you……

p.s. I definitely recommend the laundry list of records I spout off at the end of the show as well

Paying tribute to the musicians, singers and songwriters who we lost this year. This week it is ten songs representing these people who passed on and spotlighting the music they created. I want to mention here that there were a few more notable deaths this year and I didn’t mention them on the show.
