ROGUE COMMENTARY episodes

  • Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) with writer-director John Hancock

Hello! Welcome to the latest – as in very late – edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

On this episode, I'm delighted to welcome writer-director John Hancock – 82 years of age and still going strong – for an exclusive Zoom-enabled dive into one of my all-time favourite horror films, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, to celebrate its 50th anniversary. For best results, cue it up to the film, which is available to watch in the UK here and in the US here. My intro to the podcast will tell you when to press play. Apologies that the audio quality is not optimal; I promise I will figure out how to use my microphone properly and not rely on shouting at the screen in future.

Huge thanks to Mr. Hancock himself, of course, for inviting me to sit down and talk about one of my favourite films. John has asked me to give a shout out to Michael Doyle, author of Hancock on Hancock, which is available on Kindle here and in hardcover from all book retailers, so don't just automatically check Amazon.

  • Werewolves Within (2021) with screenwriter Mishna Wolff

Hello! Welcome to a brand new episode of the audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

On this episode, I'm delighted to bring you screenwriter Mishna Wolff's exclusive audio commentary for the whip-smart horror comedy Werewolves Within. Usually you can listen to one of our podcommentaries by themselves, but this one's a little sparse, so for best results, cue it up to the film, which is available to watch in the UK here and in the US here. My intro to the podcast will tell you where to cue it up.

Huge thanks to Mishna of course, but also to Mark Towle of Mister Smith Entertainment and Alyson Dewar and Emily Voogt from PR Works International who made the whole thing possible. And thanks too to UK distributor Signature Entertainment, who recently added our commentary for J.R. Hyams' cracking horror movie Alone to the UK Blu-ray – which is well worth seeking out.

  • Rent-A-Pal (2020) with Jon Stevenson, Brian Landis Folkins and Jimmy Weber

Hello! Welcome to the first episode of Season Two of the audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

On our Season Two premiere, I'm delighted to bring you the exclusive audio commentary for one of 2020's best psychological thrillers (or horror movies, if you see it that way), Rent-A-Pal, featuring writer/director/producer Jon Stevenson, actor/producer Brian Landis Folkins and producer/composer Jimmy Weber. The film is available to watch in the US here, and in the UK here.

Huge thanks to Jon, Brian and Jimmy for agreeing to get together and record this! Do keep an eye on Pretty People Pictures' website to see what the gang are up to next.

As with most commentaries, it's chock full of spoilers, so don't listen if you haven't seen the film.

  • The Reckoning (2020) with Neil Marshall and Charlotte Kirk

Hello! Welcome to the latest – 16th! – episode of the audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

As a big fan of Neil Marshall, from Dog Soldiers to The Descent, Doomsday – not to mention the epic "Blackwater" episode of Game of Thrones – I'm delighted to join Neil and his co-writer/lead actor (and fiancée) Charlotte Kirk for a feature-length walk through The Reckoning, which is available to watch in the US here, and will be released in the UK on April 16th.

As with most commentaries, it's chock full of spoilers, so don't listen if you haven't seen the film.

Huge thanks to Neil and Charlotte for agreeing to record the commentary (and allowing me to chip in from time to time), and to Thomas Hewson at Fetch publicity for setting it up.

  • Wrong Turn (2021)

Hello! Welcome to the latest – 15th! – episode of the audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

As soon as I finished the brilliant Wrong Turn reboot, I got straight in touch with director Mike P. Nelson to see if he'd be willing to record a commentary for us – and I was blown away when he not only said he would love to, but that he would round up lead actress Charlotte Vega, screenwriter Alan B. McElroy (who also wrote the original, for crying out loud!) and director of photography Nick Junkersfeld for a fun four-way commentary recorded (of course) via Zoom. It's a world exclusive commentary for this terrific horror film, which is available here (US) or here (UK). Obviously don't listen if you haven't seen the film, which I urge you to do – it's the best kind of reboot, which acknowledges the original but brings it kicking and screaming into the 2020s. I'm eternally grateful to Mike for rounding up the gang and pulling it together for us.

  • The Owners (2020) with Julius Berg

Hello! Welcome to the latest – 14th! – episode of the audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

I really enjoyed French director Julius Berg's 2020 horror movie The Owners, starring Maisie Williams, Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham, and I was thrilled when Julius agreed to record an exclusive commentary – in flawless English – for the film, which is available here (US) or here (UK). Obviously don't listen if you haven't seen the film, which I urge you to do – unless, of course, you've just had your nails manicured.

  • A Ghost Waits (2020) with co-writer/director Adam Stovall

Hello! Welcome to the latest episode of the brand new audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

I was really impressed by Adam Stovall's directorial debut paranormal romance A Ghost Waits, which has been a hit with festival audiences and appeared on a number of Top 10 lists from horror fans and critics. Despite having begun filming in the summer of 2016, it's only just becoming available outside the festival circuit, starting with a UK release exclusive to the Arrow Player platform. But it's due to receive a wider release in March, so if you haven't seen the film, please wait until it's released in your territory before listening to Adam's behind-the-scenes chat.

Huge thanks to Adam for agreeing to record this exclusive commentary, and to Thomas Hewson at Fetch PR for hooking us up.

Programming note: due to technical problems, I was forced to re-record my side of the conversation, and it does sound a little weird as a result.

  • Alone (2020) with director John Hyams

Hello! Welcome to the latest episode of the brand new audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

I was really blown away by John Hyams' 2020 suspense thriller/psychological horror Alone, loosely based on the 2011 Swedish film Försvunnen (Gone), and I'm really grateful to Hyams for agreeing to record an exclusive commentary for the film, which is available here (US) or here (UK). Obviously don't listen if you haven't seen the film, which I urge you to do – unless, of course, you've just had your nails manicured.

  • Criminal Audition (2019) with Samuel Gridley and Luke Kaile

Hello! Welcome to a brand new episode of the audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

On the first episode of 2021, I'm delighted to welcome Samuel Gridley and Luke Kaile, the brains behind Criminal Audition, the low-budget black comedy you can find here (US) or here (UK). Massive thanks to Samuel and Luke for agreeing to record the commentary exclusively for the podcast.

  • Black Bear (2020) with Lawrence Michael Levine and Matthew L. Weiss

Hello! Welcome to a very exciting episode of the audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes.

One of my favourite films released this year (in the US, at least) was Black Bear, a merciless examination of the personal cost of making art from life experience, featuring a tour de force  performance from the reliably brilliant Aubrey Plaza, with Sarah Gabon and Christopher Abbott also excellent. Our exclusive audio commentary features writer-director Lawrence Michael Levine and his editor Matthew L. Weiss (the deeper voice of the pair, in case you forget who's who), and moves beyond the film itself to cover a wide range of issues regarding the inspiration for the film. American and Canadian listeners who've seen the film – and if you haven't, you can find it here (US) or here (Canada) – can enjoy the commentary either as a podcast or cued up to the film (listen out for the instructions at the start), but listeners in the UK will have to wait a little longer, as the film isn't due for release here until March 2021. I promise you it's worth the wait.

I'd like to extend my heartfelt thanks to 'Larry' and 'Matt' for agreeing to sit down and revisit the film exclusively for Rogue Commentary, and for providing such a fantastic episode to follow our deep dive into Die Hard.
