As a man who has literally been to hell and back, there is precious little that frightens Al Simmons these days. This, however, comes close. This is the man who killed him. Emerging from the smoke and shadows, he looks like the devil himself, the ghastly white skull he chose long ago as his trademark eerily incandescent in the moonlight. A none-too-subtle reminder of what has passed between these two men... and the unholy bond they share.

It wasn't until later I figured out everything for myself in one divine moment of clarity-- if you had really come back from the dead, then so could I! Thing with me though, Al-- I could care less about love and happiness. You can have that crap. I've got bigger plans for my return-- plans that will change everything... forever.

In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike’s Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We’ll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It’s part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part.

Face Front, True Believers! On July 14, 2000, the Marvel cinematic universe truly began with the debut of X-Men, the motion picture! For the first time since movie serials, comic book heroes were adapted to the silver screen 100% straight(?), rather than as juvenile-skewing or camp! Blade may have been the first “good” and successful Marvel movie, and it surely influenced X-Men, but this was the film that proved that the complex soap opera of modern comics could be sold to a mainstream audience! X-Men revealed that a super-team property could launch a sprawling franchise, guided in part by Kevin Feige, and paving the way for the true Marvel Cinematic Universe! It’s such a big deal, Diabolu Frank, Illegal Machine, and Mr. Fixit decided to celebrate Rolled Spine’s sixth anniversary discussing it, 2003’s X2: X-Men United and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand in one Giant-Sized episode! Bamf! Snikt! Excelsior!
