Image Comics celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2017, and Rolled Spine Podcasts will applaud (and chide) the company with a new show looking at its longest running title! The Spawnometer is an issue by issue indexing podcast devoted to Todd McFarlane's Spawn franchise. The title references the iconic visual device representing the meter that gauged Spawn's necroplamic power reserves, which counted down each time he used his supernatural abilities until he ran out of time in his cursed second life. To represent this conceit, our episodes will cover each issue of the comic book series at a length of no more than one minute per page. We'll also be looking at Spawn's various spin-off and media adaptations, as well as covering other early Image Comics super-hero series as extended "back-up" features, rotating with each episode. Look for coverage of Rob Liefeld's Youngblood, Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon, Jim Valentino's Shadowhawk, Marc Silvestri's Cyberforce, Whilce Portactio's Wetworks, Jim Lee's WildC.A.T.s and many more!

Face Front, True Believer! Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man swings in for his, what, sixth international major motion picture release? Not counting the Italian one or the Japanese one or the TV shows that got repackaged as movies or any other random stuff? And this is the second reboot for a third proposed trilogy? Illegal Machine was so excited that he stayed home and let Pekita Trotamundos take his place alongside Diabolu Frank & Mister Fixit! Even with Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Stan Lee and more making appearances? Boy, this one must really be something! And we've got the Mighty Marvel Mailbag, with Pekita playing Flo Steinberg (no subtitles, sorry)! Excelsior!

The Ill Mac, Mister Joe Fixit and Diabolu Frank return after nearly five months with black & whitesploitation! Fantagraphics Books represent at 0:38 with Johnny Ryan’s Prison Pit, an adults-only sci-fi gorehound wrestling original graphic novel series, currently at five volumes with an animated adaptation of the first. Then at 22:17, Frank offers a second installment of our “Swords of Cerebus” ongoing feature, a look at the seminal Canadian barbarian aardvark self-published series that published 300 regular issues between 1977-2004, taken six at a time. Discussing the encroaching craziness of once-revered creator Dave Sim with Mac leads us to a tangent at 28:54 tracing the similar trajectory of Frank Miller from Sin City to Dark Knight Strikes Again, All-Star Batman, Holy Terror and the upcoming The Master Race. 34:29 brings a theme song to our mail segment, which is so heavy with shop talk between Joe & Frank that it takes up most of the back half of the hour.
Coarse Language: Listener Discretion is Advised
Rebroadcast from Aug 24, 2016
Meanwhile… Mr. Fixit, Illegal Machine, & Diabolu Frank look at the controversial 1988 Batman: The Killing Joke prestige format one-shot that has gone from one of the most revered works of a new wave of mature readers books to a (mostly) direct-to-video animated film and an albatross around the neck of DC’s attempts at outreach to modern women not in refrigerators. While the comic and flick are a touchstone, this is less an individual critique than a debate about the treatment of prominent females in comics. But bro-ier than that sounds. Beyond Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, we also talk Frank Miller, Brian Azzarello, Rafael Albuquerque, and more. We also go broader than Barbara Gordon to other imperiled heroines like Supergirl, Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, Cassandra Caine, The Huntress, Bat-Girl, Batwoman, Superwoman, and yes, Sansa Stark. If you’re not up to date with Game of Thrones or Orange Is The New Black, this episode may be even more problematic for you than usual.
We Think You’re Special!
Meanwhile... Mr. Fixit & Illegal Machine try to talk down the hysterical, illogical Diabolu Frank as they shout about the latest addition to the DC Extended Universe for over two hours.

...I'M THE VIOLATOR!
My wife. I've got to find her... Let her know I'm back, I'm alive.
It breaks my heart to report another couple of mafia killings. It looks like our boy the "heart surgeon" is at it again.

Hosts
Diabolu Frank & Mister Fixit devote the rest of the episode to
covering your welcome comments, which given the involvement of both,
means an enormous amount of unforeseeable tangents and lengthy
exploration of same. The primary theme is comics studios that owed much
of their existence to the rise of Image, including the Malibu
Ultraverse, Milestone Media, and Axis Comics. The talk also serves as a
prelude to upcoming subjects of the show, especially Wildstorm and
Extreme Studios.

Face Front, True Believer! Fry-Hole returns to join Illegal Machine, Mister Fixit, & (oh, lord, "The Ruiner") Diabolu Frank to discuss (bash? ruin?) the heavily-anticipated sequel to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most beloved and surprising films, Guardians of the Galaxy! The episode is as long as the actual movie, so whether we love it or hate it, you're going to get maybe too much of us on this, however it shakes out! Excelsior!
