In this new podcast, Paul visits with actor/director/playwright Ronnie Marmo who became a fixture in Chicago with the play, “I’m Not a Comedian, I’m Lenny Bruce.” He returns to the city but now performing that role in rep with a new show: “Bill W. and Dr. Bob” which is a gripping and true story about the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. Marmo directs and stars in the play along with a cast of Chicago-based actors. Both plays will be performed in the Richard Christiensen Theater of the Biograph Theater (which was the home to Victory Gardens Theater for many years).
To be sure, Bill W is a play for everyone. Those with alcohol in their past or present may experience the show in a very personal way, but the show is funny, warm and relatable by all. It’s clearly a wonderful theater going experience.
And Lenny Bruce is truly a magnificent play that is raw, funny and brings not only Lenny Bruce to life, but also highlights the struggle over free speech rights we continue to live through today.
Tickets may be purchased at: www.lennybruceonstage.com and www.billwanddrbobonstage.com, respectively. The shows begin performance on March 7th and will run through April 14th with a possible extension.
