After disobeying God in the Garden, the serpent and woman are given some stiff penalties. But the man is not spared. While the serpent will crawl in the dust, and raising children will be painful for the woman, the man will experience pain while raising food from the dust to feed his family, until he returns to the ground from which he came. And we've been toiling in the dust ever since.
