We think of God creating the universe out of nothing. And he certainly did. But the book of Genesis describes a primordial chaos ocean that was disordered, desolate, dark, and deep. That uninhabitable place becomes a metaphor for our own lives--and what God can do in them, through the creative power of his Holy Spirit.

A good book starts with a good first line. The Bible is a good book (the best book), and starts with a good first line: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." It'd be easy to skip over that and move on to verse two, but there's lots to see and think about, and there's a reason this is one of the most famous first lines in any book ever written.

Join us as Pastor Matt kicks off our series on Genesis 1, the story of God's creation of the universe and an introduction to the entire Bible. Before we jump into the story itself, we'll do an introduction to the introduction of the Bible and discuss WHY we're studying Genesis 1 and HOW we should be studying it.

It's hard to believe, but some people in Thessalonica were so convinced that Jesus was coming soon (or already had!) that they had stopped working and were mooching off their fellow church family members. Paul addresses this situation in his first letter. But it gets worse, and he has to address it again! And this time, he sounds serious.

The Apostle Paul hopes that the success of the gospel in Thessalonica might extend to every city in the empire. He knows, however, that evil people--and the evil one himself--is out there, opposed to the work of Jesus. So he asks the Thesslonians to do what all Christians everywhere should be doing--he asks us to pray. And Paul is confident that God will hear our prayers so that his work can continue, no matter who (or what) stands in its way.
