Nobody clapped when I watered the garden this morning. Nobody ever does. And I've been thinking about how that might be one of the most sacred things about it. A five-minute Rooted Moment for the woman doing the unseen work.

In this Moment So much of what a woman does all day is invisible — the laundry folded, the meal made again, the weeds pulled, the child comforted at two in the morning. No applause, no numbers, no one clapping. And we live in a world that whispers that if a thing isn't seen, it doesn't count. But we sit with 1 Thessalonians 4:11 — "aspire to live quietly… and to work with your hands" — and let it land like relief: God isn't calling you to be seen. He's calling you to a quiet, faithful, hands-on life. Jesus said your Father sees what's done in secret, and He says it as a comfort. The unseen work isn't the lesser work — in God's economy it may be the truest, precisely because no one is watching and you do it anyway, for love, unto Him. Just like the garden, whose most important work happens down in the dark, in the roots, where nothing is for show — and where everything that will one day bloom is being decided.

This week my hands were in two kinds of ground — the soil out back and a bowl of dough on the counter — and both of them kept teaching me the same old, good lesson about home.

In this episode My garden's been resting on the back burner lately, and that used to fill me with guilt. But this week it taught me something instead. We sit with the whole of Hosea 10:12 — "sow righteousness, reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord" — and I've come to believe the fallow ground God is talking about, for a lot of us, isn't only a patch of dirt. It's the whole good, unglamorous territory of home: homemaking, homesteading, growing a little of your own food, keeping a table, knowing your neighbors — the old ways a hurried world quietly let go hard. Breaking that ground back up is where righteousness gets sown and steadfast love gets reaped: the extra loaf for the neighbor, the basket of tomatoes on someone's step, the ordinary work done as unto the Lord. And it's an invitation to stop waiting for better soil and bloom right where you're planted — this home, this street, this season.

This week I couldn't face the whole garden — so I cleaned up a few pots. Just a few. And I've been thinking ever since about how God feels about small beginnings. A five-minute Rooted Moment for the season when little is all you've got.

In this Moment When you're in a hard, scorched stretch — the kind where you don't have the strength to fix everything that's fallen apart — the small thing you can do can feel almost pointless. This week that was a few pots cleaned up for fall; fifteen minutes that changed nothing about my circumstances. But we sit with Zechariah 4:10 — "Do not despise the day of small things, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin" — spoken over people staring at a foundation so small it made them weep. God doesn't scold them for how little they've done; He rejoices to see one small thing, a plumb line in a tired builder's hand — the sign that someone has decided to begin again. Friend, when you do the one small faithful thing — the one bed, the one pot, the one prayer you barely had the strength to pray — heaven doesn't sigh. Heaven rejoices. Not because it's big, but because it's a beginning, and beginnings are where God loves to work.

I walked out to a scorched, struggling garden this week — most of it barely hanging on — and the only thing blooming its whole heart out was the bougainvillea, like nothing was wrong. I stood there a long minute and thought: maybe that's exactly where I'm supposed to be looking.

In this episode This is our first Tuesday together in the new, slower rhythm — and I'm not going to start it by pretending. It's been a hard season, in the garden and in life, the kind of discouragement I can't quite shake. And my garden looks exactly like I feel: most of the beds failing in the heat, and only a few survivors still green — the wild bougainvillea, the sprawling cucumbers, a stubborn handful of okra. So we sit with Philippians 4:8 — "whatever is true… whatever is lovely… think about these things" — written by Paul from a prison cell, to a worn-out church. Not as "look on the bright side," but as the deliberate, disciplined turning of your eyes off the wreckage you can't fix today and onto what is still true, still good, still alive. The survivors in my garden aren't the leftovers — they're the sermon. And when I had no strength to fight for the whole garden, I did the one small thing I could: I cleaned up a few pots for fall. Because you cannot feel your way to hope — but you can pick up a pot, and let the feeling come toward you while your hands are busy with something good.

The garden is about to move into a slower season — and after this summer, I've decided I am too. A short Rooted Moment, and a gentle change to the rhythm of this podcast going into fall.

In this Moment Here in Zone 9, fall is a real and genuinely fruitful season — but it's a quieter one. Smaller. Slower. And sitting with Ecclesiastes 3:1 — "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven" — I've had to be honest that God didn't make a world of endless summer. He made seasons: a time to plant like mad, and a time to slow down. I've watched myself do to my own life exactly what I did to my garden this summer — overextend, take on more than one woman can faithfully tend, and call the exhaustion "commitment." So starting in September, I'm changing our rhythm here at Rooted in Grace. Instead of two episodes a week, I'm moving to one thoughtful episode every Tuesday — a full Core teaching one week, a Rooted Moment the next, and back again — and adding more real, hands-in-the-dirt garden teaching to every Core. This week I stood over a compost bin — the place where I throw what's finished — and found brand-new life growing out of it. I think that's the truest thing the garden has told me all summer.

In this episode It's been a season of real loss — the heritage beans lost to blight, the spent okra I finally pulled — and I don't want to skip over the grief of it. But there are locusts that eat more than plants: this scorching stretch ate time, energy, and goals I didn't reach, too. We sit with Joel 2:25–26 — "I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten" — and here's the wonder: the restoration is already breaking in. Volunteer papaya seedlings rising out of my compost bin. New okra I'm harvesting more of than I can use. Late cucumbers finally flowering. Zinnias reseeding themselves everywhere. God restoring in the very ground I'd written off. It lands on gardening within your limits — clearing the spent beds, letting go of what you can't tend, "less tended well is more" — and drawing a line in the sand to hand the eaten years back to the God who restores.

Even my garden stops working in the worst of the afternoon heat — it just waits it out in whatever shade it can find. Maybe that's not failure. Maybe that's wisdom. A five-minute Rooted Moment for the season you can barely grow in.

In this Moment It's been relentless — 90s, thick and humid, no relief in sight — and my garden has been teaching me something: in the hottest part of the day it stops, curls in a little, and waits for the heat to break. For years I'd have called that failing. But we sit with Psalm 121:5–6 — "the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day" — and the mercy in it: God doesn't remove the sun from the sky, He stands between you and it. He becomes the shade you couldn't make for yourself. So if you're in a season where you can barely grow — just surviving the heat, doing the bare minimum to stay alive — that isn't you failing. That's you being kept. You don't have to produce in the peak of the heat. You're allowed to rest in the shade of the God who is standing between you and everything that would scorch you.

The plants on my drip line are making it through this relentless heat. The ones that depend on me remembering to water them… are not. A conversation for the woman who's trying to keep everything alive by hand — and can't.

In this episode It's been 90s and humid for weeks with no relief, and even when I water faithfully I can barely keep some things alive — while whatever's not on the drip line struggles the most. That contrast cracked something open for me. We sit with Jeremiah 17:7–8 — the tree planted by the water that does not fear when heat comes — and the living water Jesus offered a worn-out woman at a well. Three truths: you can't hand-water your way through a drought, and you were never meant to be the source; what survives is what's rooted deep to a source that doesn't depend on you remembering; and once you're rooted, you stop merely surviving and start to overflow. Plus a real practical-watering lesson (deep and early beats frequent and frantic — and mulch matters), and the basil that's thriving in the very heat that's wilting everything I fuss over.

You can cut a weed down to nothing and feel like you’ve won. But if you leave the root, you haven’t solved the problem—you may have taught it to grow stronger. A short Rooted Moment about the difference between managing what appears on the surface and allowing God to reach what is growing underneath.

In this episode I’m returning to a lesson my garden teaches me repeatedly: cutting a weed is not the same as removing it. Shears, mowers, and hurried hands can make the ground look clean for a day, but the untouched root quietly sends up new growth.

Our souls can work the same way. We apologize for the sharp word without asking what fed the anger. We manage the habit without examining the ache beneath it. We stay busy so we do not have to face what is driving the busyness.

Through Hebrews 12:15, we consider why Scripture warns us about the root of bitterness—not only the visible fruit it eventually produces. An unexamined root rarely stays contained. But God’s invitation is not a frantic overhaul. It is honest, faithful tending: one root, one prayer, and one courageous look beneath the surface at a time.
