In 2018 - last year, the growing overlap between geopolitics and technology became evident in two big narratives: first, a new Cold War-style confrontation between the US and China over the future of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and the second is a broad backlash against the growing power of digital technology firms and companies.

In 2018, the disruptive style of President Donald Trump continued to drive politics in the United States, while a long-running economic expansion started to show signs of weakness.
