1st Sorrowful Mystery - The Agony of Jesus in the Garden (Luk 22:44-45) He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found them sleeping from grief.

2nd Sorrowful Mystery - The Scourging at the Pillar (Jn 19:1) Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged.

3rd Sorrowful Mystery - Jesus is Crowned With Thorns (Mat 27:28-29) They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him. Weaving a crown out of thorns,* they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

4th Sorrowful Mystery - Jesus Carried the Cross (Jn 19:17) And carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.

5th Sorrowful Mystery - The Crucifixion of Our Lord (Luk 23:46) Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last.
