Rough and Tumble Play: The ins and Outs with Frances Carlson

Listen Later

STOP FIGHTING!!

I think this phrase is voiced so much that children have almost become deaf to it.

I have a question for you - are your children fighting, or are they participating in big body play?

I had the absolute privilege of speaking to Frances Carlson. Frances wrote Big Body Play: Why Boisterous, Vigorous, and Very Physical Play Is Essential to Children's Development and Learning. This is a podcast that I am deeply looking forward to sharing due to our rich conversation that spanned from social-emotional development all the way to consent.

Frances says the three main ways to know if the interactions between children are in the form of big body play or in the realm of fighting are

1. Are the children's faces upturned with smiles, or are they filled with tight lips and grimaces?

2. Can the child go in and out of the play? Or is there a sense of being trapped?

3. Does the child, if they leave, feel happy to return to the play?

Tune in and learn all the ins and outs of this fascinating topic that hits on all a child's growing developmental zones.
