Rough Magic Performance Company is a professional theater company focused on supporting women artists, audiences, and stories; we strive to embrace the complexities and diversity of women’s experiences from classics to contemporary work while promoting artistic excellence and community engagement.

In Season 4, we explore a modern take on Shakespeare's classic "The Tempest". Featuring an all female/non-binary cast, the themes of generational trauma and colonization are explored. The adaptation and sound design call out how the violence from one generation can echo into future generations; and the power love, wonder, and a little magic have to break these cycles.

The play was originally produced by the NAACP in 1916 in an attempt to build empathy for the experience of Black Americans. The themes present in this piece are directly relatable to our current challenges as Americans dealing with our complicated and still not fully realized past. Listeners should be aware that this production includes descriptions of racism, racially motivated violence, and the use of the N-word. We hope that by bringing this important and beautifully written piece of American literary history into a modern theatrical medium, today's listeners will resonate with feelings of empathy for the Black experience, driving social change to end racism and racially motivated violence in America.

Just in time for Halloween and the monumental 2020 election, RMPC delivers a new spin on Shakespeare’s classic tale of ambition and loss with an all-female podcast production. The Macbeths, in a state of joint postpartum psychosis after the loss of several children to miscarriages and still-births, are left vulnerable to the corrupting influences of the evil spirits lurking in Scotland’s forests and the darker side of the pursuit of power. Intermingling Shakespeare’s text with that of Sylvia Plath’s poem “Parliament Hill Fields,” the adaptation creates a soundscape of poetry within a classic ghost story. Featuring the voice talents of Aimee Bryant, Ashawnti Sakina Ford, Alayne Hopkins, Katie Kaufman, Catherine Johnson Justice, and Taj Ruler.
