Jesus is no longer a baby. The journey of the wise men points to the universal reach of Jesus’s kingship, a Saviour not just for Israel but for the world. Who are we in this story? Are we the wise men who recognize Jesus? Or do we dismiss the reality of Jesus? Lots of people are happy for Jesus to remain baby Jesus in the manger in December. But are they ready for Him to be King in January and through all the years? It took a king (three kings in fact) to recognize The King. The challenge remains: do we recognize Jesus as King and Lord in our lives today?

The presentation of Jesus in the temple, rewarding Simeon’s patience and faithfulness, reveals God’s promise fulfilled and marks a moment of reflection. As we look back on God’s faithfulness in 2024, we look forward with gratitude and renewed purpose in 2025.

Even in silence, God is at work, transforming old disappointments into new hope. The Holy Spirit is present in Mary’s and Elizabeth’s pregnancies. Elizabeth’s child, John the Baptist, prepares the way for the one who will come after him: Jesus. Following His resurrection, Jesus announces that one will come after Him: the comforter and friend, the Holy Spirit (who was there from the beginning) The new is old and the old is new.

Our journey begins with the anticipation of the Messiah, woven through centuries of prophecy and waiting. The Jewish lineage of Jesus and the “skeletons” in his genealogy illustrate God’s unexpected choice to bring hope through ordinary, often broken people. This message encourages us to wait expectantly for God’s promises, knowing that He is faithful. We are living in the anticipation, which prophecy is the fulfillment of the Old Covenant analogue of the New Covenant concept of “already but not yet” with respect to the resurrection of the saints.
