It’s been a while since I’ve done a podcast but whilst at the  Enhancement Themes conference last week in between promoting JISC and the Services I managed an impromptu interview with Colin Dalziel from Pebble Learning to ask him about the next version of PebblePad, version 3, which is due out by the end of this year.

Welcome the the return of RSC-MP3. The RSC-MP3 series has evolved over time and in it’s latest incarnation I’m re-joined by Kevin Brace in his new role of Associate Head of Technology Enhanced Learning at Aston University.

We had a long old catch up/information sharing session and over the next couple of months I’m going to chuck our conversation, pulling out information you might find useful. For our first chuck we talk about funding, in particular JISC funding for educational and institutional projects. Kevin talks about his recent experience of submitting an unsuccessful bid which was going to collect international best practice in e-Portfolios and I talk about my experience on the other end as a bid marker.

To get an idea of funding available from JISC over the next 12 months they recently released the Roadmap of future grant funding and Roadmap of Future Invitations to Tender [for fans of Twitter we use the @rsc_ne_scotland account to tweet funding calls (as well as news/events from other JISC Services)].

JISC also allowed open access to the Programme Information Management System (PIMS). This was previously available to “JISC Executive staff only and is a record of all JISC-funded programmes and projects, from the year 2000 onwards”.

This month for RSC-MP3 I interview Andrew Comrie, the Director of the Edinburgh, Lothians, Fife and Borders Regional Articulation Hub (ELRAH). ELRAH is one of the five regional hubs being funded by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) to support and enhance opportunities for students to use there qualifications to gain direct entry into years 2 or 3 of university degree programmes.

As part of this interview Andrew explains how ELRAH is supporting students using a combination of face-to-face support and virtual resources such as student-generated podcasts, as well as the creation of a national database of articulation routes. Andrew also describes how ELRAH is exploring non-traditional articulation routes from the workplace to university

0:45 – Description of network of articulation support advisors working with students and staff – helping organise visits, generate resources and support articulation projects

2:29 - ‘Message of support’ podcasts – student reflections on articulation visits. Expanded recently to include student requiring special support needs.

5:21 – Challenges of exposing students to the virtual as well as physical learning space. In particular, the problems with having student logins when they are not matriculated students. Andrew explained the relationship between Adam Smith College and Abertay University where an ‘associate’ student status has been created. Staff from Queen Margaret University library have been going on a roadshow to colleges.

7:15 - Online communities of practice project looking at using technology can be used to foster social cohesion prior to enrolling at university. As well as drawing on existing resources exploring exploring eportfolios and if data can be easily moved between systems.

8:55 – I asked how are the social connections being built? Andrew explained it was early days but as well as looking at blogging solutions as well as the possibility of using social networks like Bebo and Facebook.

10:12 – Challenges of collecting information about existing articulation routes and finding out if there is any formal agreement. Building a database of articulation routes, in the first instance for the ELRAH region, but there has been agreement with the other articulation hubs to use the same system to allow data to be collected nationally.

13:30 – Data collection templates have been created to allow evidencing of impact. The templates link to data from the SQA and SFC

15:00 – Andrew talks about ELRAH’s exploration of non traditional articulation routes from the workplace to university via modern apprenticeships and vocational qualification. Research has shown that employers are interested in workbased degrees. Report on this will be available on the ELRAH website soon.

In this the final instalment of RSC-MP3 in it’s current format, Martin discusses the relative merits of outputs of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE – pronounced Nessie) as compared to the UK’s National Student Survey. Martin talks about some of the ”high impact learning activities” identified by the NSSE which includes using authentic research in teaching and learning, a technique used by US practitioner Professor Michael Wesch. Meanwhile Kevin highlights the virtues of low cost video cameras including some case studies in teaching and learning as well as some technical considerations you should make before blowing your year end underspend. Kevin also discusses some of the ALT/eLN webinars in particular reviewing the session on  why e-Learning projects go wrong. Final Kevin rounds off with a book review on the eportfolio platform Mahara.

As a finale to this current chapter of the “Kevin & Martin” show, we discuss our approaches and methods of creating discussion based podcasts, hoping to inspire others to do the same.  Kevin is leaving the RSC for pastures new, so we both hope that these past 10 episodes have proved inspiring to all. “Technological convergence – changing the way we create, consume, learn and interact with each other”

This month Martin responds to a listener request and discusses Google’s latest social feature Buzz. Buzz has been designed to make sharing easier, linking to Google other services including YouTube and Reader as well as third party networks like Twitter and Facebook. We conclude that whilst Buzz is currently of limited benefit to the majority of educationalists it is another example of how the interlinking of separate communication and media streams has the potential to benefit formal and informal learning, technological convergence ‘changing the way we create, consume, learn and interact with each other’. An example of this convergence is outlined in Martin’s recent work which allows twitter discussions made during television broadcasts to be replayed as subtitles in BBC iPlayer downloads.

Aspects of ‘convergence’ are further highlighted by Kevin has he discusses his months blog posts which includes his reflections on the recent Learning Technologies Conference and the JISC Business and Community Engagement programme. In particular Kevin highlights the growing importance of both informal and “rapid e-learning”, discussing some of the tools which can be used to facilitate and measure its impact as well as highlighting some effective practice case studies.

Kevin also highlights JISC’s Business and Community Engagement programme which is “designed to support institutions in their strategic management of relationships … in order to deliver services which benefit the economy and society”. This programme is a response to the Governments desire to enhance knowledge transfer/exchange and Kevin discusses some examples of this happening locally in the West Midlands and nationally. An e-portfolio is a purposeful aggregation of digital items – ideas, evidence, reflections, feedback etc, which ‘presents’ a selected audience with evidence of a person’s learning and/or ability. Sutherland and Powell (2007)

Widening participation, lifelong learning, employability, these are some of the reasons why e-portfolios are being used more widely in our institutions to support teaching and learning. In our first RSC-MP3 of 2010 we practice what we preach, Martin highlighting some of his recent reflections on his own ‘purposefully aggregation of digital items’, reviewing some of his blog posts from the last 18 months. As part of this we discuss mobile technology, looking at the continue rise of the mobile phone and the ‘flat-line’ of student-owned netbooks. Continuing the theme of ‘power in your pocket’, Martin highlights the evolving area of using student owned devices (including mobile phones) for ‘Ask the Audience’ style voting interaction.

Having practiced what we preach, we preach some more with Kevin highlighting the JISC RSC West Midlands new e-portfolio “try before you buy” project. The University of Southampton’s embryonic eFolio project is highlighted as best pracice, which has used gap analysis and user centred design principals to integrate existing university e-systems into a bespoke e-portfolio platform, using a number of open source tools as the glue. Continuing our look at open source solutions Kevin discusses how you can get the most out of Moodle using custom themes.

For this months podcast Martin also interviews Susi Peacock discussing how Queen Margaret University (QMU) have implemented their campus-wide e-portfolio solution, PebblePad.  Susi talks about QMUs journey from adoption to integration, describing how local championing of e-portfolios has evolved into programme level integration extending beyond the institution through alumni access and professional body support. This month Martin interviewed Susi Peacock from the Centre for Academic Practice at Queen Margaret University (QMU) about their use of the PebblePad e-portfolio system. QMU have been using PebblePad since 2004/05, providing all their students and staff with the opportunity to maintain their own portfolio of work. In the interview we discuss how the University has gone from adoption at modular level to integration into entire degree programmes, and beyond with alumni and professional body access.

Using earlier adopters already using paper-based portfolios targeted. Looking for the quick wins. Building on this as a foundation to promote use in other areas like Drama.

Important to remember that you need team and external examiner support.

5:37 Is there an assessment strategy which supports the use of e-portfolios for across the institution?

Number of guides have been produced to help staff decide a workflow to maintain consistency, combined with central support from CAP.

7:15 Are there any examples of programme level adoption of e-portfolios?

Several programmes including nursing have a staggered level of introduction from year 1 (continuing use as part of professional development).

Crucial to explain to staff and students that they have alumni access to portfolios after they graduate.

Important to liaise with professional bodies who maybe using other portfolio systems.

8:15 Has there been much take-up of alumni access?

Physiotherapy students can transfer straight into the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) system (also PebblePad) or continue alumni access.

Other main take-up is from radiography, nursing and drama.

It is an opt-in service

8:40 What feedback are you getting from students on the use of e-portfolios?

Don’t introduce in last year, start from the beginning.

Value feedback particualarly when it is linked to what they are doing.

Need to know why they are using it and embedded in the curriculum

10:00 Are there many staff that use PebblePad for their own professional development?

Starting to grow, particularly for professional doctorate.

It is noticeable that tutors who use an e-portfolio for themselves are the best tutors when it comes to supporting student use.

10:40 Has there been much change in use since the beginning of the project like mobile access?

Not interest in mobile (they do have guides on how to do it)

Change has been from module to programme adoption.

Using it as a tool for dialogue around assessment

“For the love of money, not learning!” So say some responses to the new Higher Ambitions framework announced by Lord Mandleson.  This month Kevin runs through his latest blog posts which  cover reports connected with the importance of Higher Education to the UK economy, focussing on research. Innovative e-research projects, funding and bidding, and UK drivers are covered. Topics such as open repositories, knowledge sharing, and research based communities of practice, also feature.  Providing advice and support to the community in the form of second life “sandpits” and new eportfolio publications add to the e-learning mix this month.

Meanwhile Martin has been immersing himself in Google Wave. Wave enables real-time collaboration over the internet and whilst not full released yet educators are already exploring its potential impact in a number of areas of teaching and learning. Building on last month’s discussion Martin highlights the flexibility of Wave including how it be embedded into different websites, including the institutional VLE, enabling students to have greater choice over their personal learning environment.

As part of this month’s RSC-MP3 we also have an interview with recognised ‘recognition of prior learning’ expert Ruth Whittaker.
