What does our faith sound like?

As part of our Faith That Works series through the book of James, Pastor Joe takes us into James 3:1–12 to explore the power of our words and what they reveal about the condition of our hearts.

The tongue may be small, but it has enormous influence. Our words can build people up or tear them down, bring life or cause destruction, encourage or wound. James uses powerful images of horses, ships, fire and springs of water to show us just how significant our speech really is.

Pastor Joe challenges us to consider whether our words reflect the faith we profess. If we praise God with our mouths but use those same mouths to curse, criticise or tear others down, what does that reveal about our hearts? True faith should affect not only what we believe and how we live, but also how we speak.

But Faith That Speaks is ultimately about more than simply watching what we say. It is about discovering the life-giving power of confession. As Romans 10 reminds us, when we believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, we find salvation.

Our confession of faith is not just something we make at the beginning of our Christian journey. It is something we make every day — on the mountaintops and in the valleys, in joy and in suffering, in the moments when faith feels easy and in the moments when we need to hold on to it most.
