CONTENT WARNINGS: discussions of body horror (1:15:00-1:17:00)
While there was a contingent of separatists, among the first settlers of Antarras, the original missions to Antarras weren't launched with the idea of ever becoming fully independent from Earth. Enough uncertainties plagued the early missions that finding native alternatives to every single need could never have been high on the list of priorities: early efforts towards practical sustainability went into determining what familiar crops found functional homes in Antarran soil, and what available building materials could replace the temporary prefab structures brought over on those first ships. Fuel might have been higher on the list had it not, in fact, been so readily available—hellstone's value came from its easy, if dangerous, efficiency as an energy source. But there was enough else those first settlers needed that its value as an export vastly outweighed the value in investing in long-term infrastructure to encourage its use on Antarras.
This week, on Ruin's Gate: Crises of energy and conscience alike.
