Running 44@60 - tips, ideas and advice for your first ultra marathon or marathon

Running & Crewing the ARC 100 with Stuart and Rachel Thomson

Listen Later

The Arc of Attrition is one of the foremost ultra running events on the UK calendar. It offers two distances – 100 miles and 50 miles.

The 100 mile event starts at midday on Friday in the Cornish fishing village of Coverack and winds its way along the coastal path via Lands End to the finish at Porthtowan on the north coast. Competitors have to reach the finish by midnight on Saturday. There are cut off points along the way along with in the scene half of the race some of the most difficult terrain on the coastal path.

In this episode we meet Stuart & Rachel Thomson. Stuart ran the 100 collecting a converted gold buckle for completing in under 30 hours (28:33). Rachel was head of Crewing, organising a support team of 6-7 to assist Stuart with changes of shoes, clothing, as well as drinks and food including marmalade rolls.

They share their experiences with Rachel explain how the crew came together, the plans they had and how it went during the run. Stuart shares insights into being an ARC 100 competitor and tips from shoe changes to being flexible if things don't always go to plan.

Rachel's top crewing tips revolve around meticulous preparation and having a big torch on hand for the many night time meetings with your runner.
