In an ordinary house in Bethany, Jesus is extravagantly anointed as heaven and earth’s true King. Not many days before the stink of death hung heavy, now the house is filled with the fragrance of Mary’s perfume — pure nard. In this scene, Mary assumes the role of provocative prophet. Like Samuel anointed Kings Saul and David — Mary, the sister of the one Jesus had raised from the dead, appoints him to be the King for which all creation groans.
