Ruth Masters founded MastersLaw LLC in 2007 after practicing as a civil litigator in both the private and public sectors.

She earned her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School, where she served as associate editor of the University of Chicago Legal Forum, and received the award for outstanding student comment. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania.

Upon law school graduation, she clerked for the Honorable Charles Levin on the Michigan Supreme Court. She then worked for several years as an associate in the Chicago office of Latham & Watkins.

She subsequently worked for the City of Chicago Corporation Counsel’s appeals division as an assistant corporation counsel where she briefed and argued a wide range of issues before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the Illinois appellate courts. She also worked for the Torts Division writing and arguing dispositive motions in high exposure cases. She then returned to private practice.

Masters is involved with the legal community as a former board member of, and current volunteer with, the Pro Bono Network which works to expand legal services to those in the Chicagoland area who cannot afford them. She is also a member of the Appellate Lawyers Association of Illinois and the Chicago Bar Association. She received Legal Aid Chicago’s 2015 and 2016 Housing Practice Group Volunteer of the Year award. She has also published articles and lectured on topics related to municipal law and appellate practice.
