The opening class lays the ground before any analysis of illusion: a foundation of loving-kindness and a clear reason for practicing at all, without which the insight work "goes sour." It previews the twelve classic examples of illusion to come, and sets out the thesis that runs through the whole series - that depth of insight into emptiness and breadth of compassion grow together.
