The Israelites were trapped. They were caught between the Egyptian army and the deep Red Sea. They were terrified because they were focused on the power of their enemy and they had forgotten the power of their God. God was about do something so marvelous and so miraculous that many people try to minimize it to make it more believable. God was about to open up a dry path in the middle of the deep Red Sea.
