S1:E14 The Freedom of Limitations

Listen Later

Too many choices are secretly sabotaging your health journey more than any food choice ever could.

I took one of our international students to the grocery store recently and she stopped dead in the middle of the cereal aisle. Completely overwhelmed. She turned her head slowly from one end to the other and said... "How do you choose?" And I looked at that aisle through her eyes for the first time in years.

Hundreds of cereals. Hundreds of cookie and cracker options. Hundreds of chip and pretzel and popcorn options. We are spoiled by options. And our toddler committees are absolutely in heaven.

In this episode I share why too many choices are exhausting your brain before you even get to dinner, and why limiting your options is not a punishment - it is actually the thing that sets you free. I bring in psychologist Barry Schwartz and his book The Paradox of Choice, which argues that more options do not make us happier - they make us more anxious, more exhausted, and less satisfied. He calls it decision fatigue. And by the time you have made a hundred small decisions throughout your day your brain is genuinely tired. And a tired brain does not make good choices.

I also share what my own comeback has looked like - stashing protein forward, low glycemic food in my purse, my glove compartment, and my pantry, eating when my alarm goes off, and never negotiating with the toddler committee about what is on the menu.

Limitation is not the opposite of freedom. For most of us... limitation IS freedom.

What we cover:

  • Why the paradox of choice is exhausting your decision making before dinner even hits
  • Decision fatigue and why your brain is genuinely tired by the time food cravings strike
  • Why your clients saying "I am bored" with a simple plan is just the toddler committee throwing a fit
  • How stashing simple protein forward food everywhere changed everything on this comeback
  • Why the program we coach works β€” options delivered to your door plus the outer aisles of the grocery store
  • The freedom that comes from stopping the all day negotiation with yourself

Your tiny step from this episode:
Write down your five proteins, five vegetables, and two healthy fats. Put the list on your refrigerator. That is your menu for the week. Stop negotiating. Start executing.
