How do we handle co-parenting expenses? People spend a lot of their time isolating who's going to get custody. Trying to figure out when Mom is going to see the kids or when Dad is going to see the kids. The expenses associated with that don't get the same press. There's often glossing over the expense. If Mom and Dad are living two blocks from each other, expenses may not be too important. But, when one Mon lives in one county and Dad lives in another, you will have logistical issues. Arranging to pick up and drop off children becomes an issue. The related expenses may become significant over the course of a year. This may not just be a question of the financial expense of transportation. Your children may have expensive hobbies. It also becomes significant if one parent has custody and the other parent has scheduled visits. Parents will have to be transparent about their financial situation. Parents oftentimes don't want to tell each other how much money is at their disposal. Having transparent discussions about finances can help parents work something out. They can agree on a joint budget. At the end of the day, the court will equitably decide on child support based on the child's best interest.
