You hear this all the time. "Don't put your kids in the middle!" How can they not be in the middle? In a divorce with children, they are front and center. How can they not be in the middle of your divorce? What it really boils down to is not using the children as leverage in your divorce. You need to avoid getting your children into decisions that don't really involve them. Don't spin your financial situation with the children. Talk to your spouse or file a motion in court. Don't involve your children in financial discussions. It will help if parents can have a mutual agreement about expenses. They have to agree on what they are going to spend money on or what they will not spend their money on. Parents need to have a collaborative effort to work together on financial matters. A mutually agreed financial plan will avoid having children being used as pawns and getting caught in the middle.
