What are the red flags to watch for when hiring a lawyer? You feel you need a lawyer for your divorce case or your custody case.  You need one. You have to have one because you won't be able to do it alone. How do you find the right lawyer for you? You're talking to your lawyer and your lawyer isn't listening. The lawyer seems to be busy with other things (instead of taking notes). Your lawyer is answering phones and making you feel you're getting in the way. That is not the lawyer you want. It's a red flag. Your lawyer is going to be your advocate, your "mouthpiece" in the court. Your voice in the courtroom. Your lawyer should have good communication skills. If your lawyer is not communicating well with you in their office, that lawyer will not be good in court. That lawyer will not be able to communicate under the stress of a court proceeding. It's another red flag. What is important is your vision of the case and your strategy. Do your vision and strategy match those your lawyer is proposing for your case? If it doesn't, move on and find another lawyer. Your lawyer can be aggressive but being aggressive does not mean being a jerk. Being aggressive in your case should mean believing the vision of your case. Asserting it strongly to the court. Find a lawyer who can establish a workable relationship with your ex-spouse.
