Going through a divorce in conjunction with an addiction. It’s hard enough going through a divorce without an addiction. You’re suffering enough with addiction. Then you’re served with divorce papers, there’s a double impact. It could be the addiction is long-standing. It could be, you had an addiction during your courtship before the marriage. Some people struggle with addiction their whole lives in different forms. Sometimes they overcome. Sometimes they don’t. Some go through recovery. Some don’t. The fact is the divorce papers may have been served because of the addiction. If you’re facing a divorce all the while dealing with you should definitely seek support. Get help from the therapeutic community. The court is not going to see your addiction like it's a non-chronic sickness. The court will look at addiction in the context of you handling your children. The court will look at you in the context of custody, parenting time, and transportation of minor children. You have to show the court that you're taking steps to resolve the addiction. You are getting the support you need. You may not get custody but you get parenting time. You will have a chance for modifications once your addiction is resolved.
