Timothy studied Paul's messages. He absorbed their essence into his thinking and incorporated them into his lifestyle. The lessons were appropriate for God's elect of that day in that culture. Unfortunately, many uncalled preachers wrongly divide the word of truth, leading people to damnation. So, Paul warned him to "shun profane and vain babblings: {errant preaching that deviated from his message} for they will increase unto more ungodliness. {For} their word {misconceptions} will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus." (2 Timothy 16-17). The term "ungodly" means unapproved by God. It is a parallel concept to "iniquity."
