1Samuel 18:7 "And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. 8 And Saul was very wroth..."

David had been annointed King, but still served under King Saul for a time. This led to his attempted murder, escape, exile, and all out war against him.

Later King David united the Kingdom, enlarged the borders of Israel, established ZION, the city of David, and ruled justly.
