South African Football legend Professor Mlungisi Ngubane says the state of football in the country is disappointing. Ngubane believes the South African Football Association (SAFA) has to jerk up if our national teams are to improve their performance in international tournaments. Ngubane says the senior national team (Bafana Bafana)’s performance at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt is a good example of how bad things are.

Imraan Khan says he was not overly surprised about his appointment as Dolphins coach after he was confirmed in the role by the KwaZulu-Natal franchise on Tuesday. The former Proteas batsman who took over from Grant Morgan, who vacated the position earlier this month to take over as assistant coach of Scotland, has been handed a one-year deal at Kingsmead.

The Springboks will be looking to rewrite the history books and beat New Zealand, in two consecutive Test matches, for the first time ever in Wellington when they clash in the Rugby Championships this Saturday. South Africa pulled off a narrow 36-34 victory last year at the Westpac Stadium, affectionately known as The Cake Tin, registering their first ever win in seven attempts. The past few weeks have seen close to 10 national team head coaches who were at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt vacating their jobs and this followed different results achieved by these teams at the tournament. Amongst them have been head coaches of Namibia Ricardo Mannetti, Morocco’s Herve Renard, Egypt’s Javier Aguirre, Tanzania’s Emmanuel Amunike, Uganda’s Sebastien Desabre and few others. Very soon the South African Football Association (SAFA) will have to sit down with current Bafana Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter and map the way forward. SAFA President Danny Jordaan has reiterated that they need a coach who will be pro youthful talent.

Teko Modise may have retired from playing at the end of last season, but the Cape Town City man is still as passionate about football as ever. The former Bafana Bafana international has stepped off the field, and into the offices at City as he begins the next chapter of his career behind the scenes. Modise says he is very excited about his new role as Executive PRO, and he is looking forward to challenging himself in a different capacity.

SuperSport United will head back to Gauteng on Wednesday after spending the past week in camp in Cape Town. With just over a week to go until the start of the Absa Premiership season, SuperSport coach Kaitano Tembo is pleased with how the pre-season has gone.

Black Leopards new defender Siyabonga Zulu says his move up North is a fresh start. Zulu joined Leopards on a three year deal this week after spending the last week training with the club. The left back, who was released by Mamelodi Sundowns in January for disciplinary issues, says he wants a change of environment from Gauteng.

With just over a week until the start of the Absa Premiership season, Cape Town City have started a drive to sell more season tickets this season. City are hoping to at least double their season ticket sales from last season and, have reduced the prices on the package deal fans of the club. Young Toyota Cheetahs flanker Abongile Nonkontwana says the Free State side has integrity on and off the field. The Cheetahs got their Currie Cup season off to a strong start last week when they beat Nonkontwana’s former team, the Vodacom Blue Bulls 43-27 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The Port Elizabeth born player has been with the Cheetahs since early last year. He says coach Franco Smith has instilled high levels of integrity in the side.

Lehlohonolo Majoro is delighted to be back in Durban and says he will try to make a positive impact at AmaZulu, despite the negative sentiments shown by some sections of the South African football fraternity.
