Former Cuban President Fidel Castro, who has died at the age of 90, was one of the world's longest ruling political leaders. Castro seized control of the largest Caribbean island in 1959 after waging a two-year guerrilla war against the Batista regime. After almost half a century, he unexpectedly handed over power to his younger brother, Raul, at the beginning of 2008 due to his deteriorating health. Castro evoked extreme emotions worldwide, including in South Africa. He was idolised as a champion of social justice and also despised as a ruthless dictator. Angie Kapelianis compiled this obituary of the man known simply as 'Fidel' or 'The Commander'.
