A group of farm workers from Stellenbosch has taken the government and 14 micro-lenders to court over what it says are unconstitutional lending laws. The workers, represented by the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic, want a section of the Magistrates' Court Act that allows employers to deduct money owed to a creditor from a debtor's monthly salary to be declared unconstitutional. Respondents in the case are the the micro-lenders, the National Credit Regulator, the Ministers of Justice and Correctional Services as well as Trade and Industry.
