Être surveillé et dénoncé par ses voisins, scanner un QR code pour rentrer chez soi, être empêché d’en sortir par des inconnus habilités à camper devant sa porte : difficile de survivre en Chine lorsqu’on est défenseur des droits humains. Ce documentaire raconte l'histoire au présent de trois dissidents aux prises avec un pouvoir constamment menaçant : un avocat emprisonné et torturé dont la femme et le jeune fils n’ont plus de nouvelles depuis des mois, un confrère qui a eu la chance d’être libéré mais subit d’intenses pressions de son voisinage et une jeune journaliste menacée de répression. Se sachant à la merci de l’arbitraire, tous vivent dans une angoisse permanente, sciemment attisée par un État omniscient, présent dans les moindres recoins de l’intimité de ses habitants. Depuis deux décennies, le gouvernement chinois utilise les technologies intelligentes pour repérer les "mauvais éléments" et mettre en coupe réglée une société toujours plus contrôlée...

Lorsque Julian Assange, fondateur de Wikileaks, journaliste-éditeur le plus primé de ce siècle, prononce ces mots lors d’une conférence en 2010, il convoque le monde à se soucier de la persécution généralisée et de plus en plus violente envers la presse d’investigation.

Grace au reporter Juan Passarelli et son film-documentaire The War on journalism, nous suivons sur près de dix ans les dessous de cette persécution. Cette fine synthèse révèle le jeu macabre auquel les États-unis consacrent des moyens financiers et humains inégalés, pour traquer Julian Assange, ce messager par trop gênant, ce symbole de la liberté de la presse en tant que fondement de la démocratie.

Machines in Flames (2022, 50min) finds a secret history of destruction by following the footsteps of a clandestine group of French computer workers from the 1980s.

In 1980s Toulouse, an elusive group began bombing computer companies. ‘CLODO’ disappeared after three years, without ever being caught or ever to be heard of again. Two film makers launch an investigation into CLODO, looking for answers, motivations and identities, but are soon frustrated by a collective that struck in the dead of night, leaving in their tracks only ashes and the sporadic line of cryptic graffiti. The film combines archival traces, a viral desktop choreography, and late-night video recordings of CLODO’s targets into a meditation on computation, destruction, and the lure of archives.

Machines in Flames is the debut film of the Destructionist International, and the first in a series on the appetite for abolition in ultra-leftism.

The Destructionist International is an art-theory collective dedicated to the negative in all of its forms. It is driven by a shared inclination: a taste for the fury of destruction, away from the dull submission of situations to reasoned judgement. The group works across a variety of creative mediums (text, image, video, sound) and themes (militancy, sabotage, technology, liberation).

Direction and production: Thomas Dekeyser is a cultural geographer and filmmaker at the Centre for the GeoHumanities at Royal Holloway, University of London. He specialises in experimental films that dig into the complex politics of digital technologies, refusal, and militant histories.

Direction and production: Andrew Culp is a media theorist and maker at the California Institute of the Arts. His writing has been published in a dozen languages, including the books Dark Deleuze and A Guerrilla Guide to Refusal.

Sound production and voice-over: Dana Papachristou provided Machines in Flames with its unique moody sound composition and voice-over. She is a sound artist, multi-instrumentalist and musicologist, who (co-)founded Aesthate Research Centre and akoo-o, a collective active in walking, geo-location, sound, anthropology and media studies.

Fighting against surveillance has never been easy. But in the past year it has been specially tough in France. This talk is about shedding light on the many situations where the French State used surveillance to increase repression, mainly against activists, during the last months. Not to despair of this, but willing to provide a sincere overview to the rest of the world, La Quadrature du Net proposes to depict this situation as a satirical tale, with its own characters, plots and suspense. We want to show the political tension going on right now in France and how the checks and balances are lacking to stop this headlong rush to a surveillance state.

Looking back to France in 2023, what do we see? Implementation of new technologies such as drones, DNA marking or new generation of spywares. Also, an intensification of political surveillance, either by law enforcement deploying disproportionate means of investigations towards environmental activists or intelligence services using cameras or GPS beacons to spy on places or people that they find too radical. It was also the year of the “8 December” case, a judicial case where among other things, encrypted communications of the prosecuted persons were considered as signs of "clandestinity" that reveal criminal intentions.

On top of this, we also had to deal with the legalization of biometric surveillance for the Olympics and massive censorship of social networks when riots erupted in suburbs against police violence.

This talk is about showing the reality of the situation at stake right now in France, and how it could influence the rest of Europe. At the end, we hope to raise awareness in the international community and start thinking about how, together, we can put pressure on a country who uses its old reputation to pretend to be respectful of human rights.
