Since legalization in Colorado, providers have noted increased healthcare utilization associated with acute and chronic marijuana use. It is currently unknown if cannabis use is associated with increased ED visits in patients with mental illness. The primary objective of this study was to determine the prevalence ratios of mental health diagnoses among ED visits with cannabis-associated diagnosis compared to those without cannabis-associated diagnoses in Colorado. Dr Rory Merritt interviews Dr Teresa Chan about her upcoming Education and Training article, "Learning Analytics in Medical Education Assessment." The authors situate medical learning analytics within the context of competency-based education while providing suggestions for potential areas for implementation of these techniques into resident evaluation. Authors are careful to note the data inputs, database creation and data analysis potentially performed by learning analytic techniques “should be driven by both evidence and theory.”
