Listen Later

In this episode of the Training 4 Influence podcast Tammy sits down with Taye Training Facilitator, Beckie Breakwell, to discuss her five key learning points from the Safeguarding Awareness course.

Outside of facilitating training with Taye, Beckie is an experienced child and young person’s worker with over 15 years of experience providing one-to-one and group support in sexual trauma, domestic violence, child sexual exploitation and emotional wellbeing.

This episode will be briefly covering:

  1. Legislation
  2. Multi-agency working
  3. Writing Reports
  4. Learning from Serious Case Reviews
  5. Looking After Yourself

This course is for operational staff. It is recommended that the awareness course is attended first as the focus of this training is building confidence and understanding of how to report and record abuse appropriately.

Safeguarding Alerter builds on the information from the awareness course. It adds more detail to the underpinning principles, legislation, guidance and reasons for abuse.

The course has been developed with a variety of operational staff based on what information they needed to fulfil their legislative responsibilities and provide the best possible service to their customer group.

Course Objectives

  • Understanding why people do not report abuse
  • Having a deeper understanding of types of abuse
  • Multi-agency working, including CP conferences/MARAC/ MAPPA/MASH
  • Knowing who you should report concerns to internally/externally
  • Accessing support
  • The safeguarding jigsaw
  • Understanding processes
  • Good quality decision-making
  • Challenging a referral
  • Values and attitudes
  • Your organisation’s policies, procedures, reporting and recording mechanisms

To provide context for those listening in the future, as this episode is published we are currently around three weeks into the COVID-19 UK lockdown. Schools are closed, many employees are working from home and hospitals are at capacity.

While this podcast has been in the plans for a while, COVID-19 has changed the timetable of its delivery. Instead of starting by delving into the Training 4 Influence methodology, we realise it is more important to start this podcast with a series delivering bitesize learning, derived from our induction courses, for those frontline professionals needing further support during these times.

Frontline professionals regarded as 'critical workers' are currently working under unprecedented circumstances - with staff levels falling and government regulations changing daily, additional support is vital as many new, inexperienced or recently retired people are being asked to take on key roles.
