Over the next few weeks, we are going to see God do really big things through Elijah, but the first step was Elijah's obedience, and Elijah's dependence on God. How is God asking you to trust him? He asked the widow to give up what little she had, and to trust him to provide. He asked Elijah to go to a place that would have made no sense to anyone else. And because they obeyed, they were blessed, and they were used by God.

Jesus wanted his disciples to understand that the worlds powers dynamics were not the same as the Kingdom of God’s power dynamics. Mark wanted us his readers to understand Jesus’ point. Serving others, is the path to true greatness. And Jesus offers his own life as a model of becoming great by serving.

But here is the good news. News that James and John eventually got and put into practice by the way. James was the first disciple to be martyred, and John spent his whole life serving. Here’s what they knew, and we can know too. Every one of us can be great, because everybody can serve. Jesus gave us the pathway to being regarded as great in His kingdom. Service.

We are starting a new series and calling it "Mosaic," because we are looking at the different pictures and testimonies that make up our perception of Jesus. All four of the gospels were written by different authors, and they each had a unique purpose in writing. Our goal over the next month is to look at each of the four Gospels, to understand what it is, that each author, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wanted us to know about who Jesus is. There are four Gospels but only one story.

When John began to write this book, years after the other Gospels had been written and circulated, he was writing with a purpose. He was writing to convince the readers, that is you and me, that Jesus is the Messiah, the son of God, and because Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, we may have eternal life by believing in Him.

Those who believe He makes alive. John says that Jesus gives life and light!

We tend to think of arrogance or hubris as an individual personality trait, but it can absolutely be an organizational trait as well. We have seen that with churches. We have seen that with ministries. They seem to be on top of the world, but there's a culture of arrogance and superiority, and then, just like that, they are devoured.

Before we can stand before Satan, we must bow before God. Therefore, humble yourself under God’s mighty hand by casting all of your cares on him. Trust that He is in control. Remain watchful, pay attention to your blind spots, and remember that you aren’t alone.

Where else would we Go? We should embrace the call to follow Jesus even when it leads to suffering. We should submit to the authorities God has placed over us even when we don’t like them. We should honor the emperor…the boss…the lifeguard. 

Because when we do, we point them all towards Jesus. Part of remember who you are means that you are going to give a good impression of whose you are.

You need the church, and the church needs you too. That was Peter's message to people who were considering walking away from their faith back then, and its God's message for us today. We are called to be the people of God, not just persons of God.
