Jesus reminds us that as we are gathered to God’s Table, we are invited into transformation. He is pointing out how we may be motivated by our own personal benefit, but instead invites us out of hierarchies to a sacred order not determined by our wealth, prestige, or privilege. Jesus bids us move away from that human system to one of God’s where there is only mutual love continuing.

In Baptism we promise to “seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving [our] neighbors as [ourselves]” and to “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.”  In this time of national crisis, it is a Christian imperative to insist that American policy and practices regarding immigrants, including at detention centers, be humane and “respect the dignity of every human being” for their sake, and for the sake of our very souls.
