  • For a Time Like This: Hunkered Down

A music podcast featuring a new song by Steve Bell, "Because We Hunkered Down." It was recorded for his upcoming album, Wouldn't You Like to Know, which will be released in September 2020. This is not the final mix of the song, but it certainly gives a very fine taste of what is in store for us with that album. We're most grateful to Steve for allowing us to share this recording with you in this way. For more information on this new album, please head to Steve's website.

The lyrics of the song are by the English priest/poet/theologian Malcolm Guite, who we featured in a podcast called "The Poet's Ear for Gospel," released on February 15, 2020. To find out more about Malcolm and his work, visit his website, where you will find recordings of him reading his poetry along with all sorts of other good things.

And do head to the web post for this song, to see the lyrics and access a recording of Malcolm reading the poem, "Because We Hunkered Down."

  • Guaranteed Basic Income | a timely idea?

A podcast produced by saint benedict's table on behalf of the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land, in which Bishop Geoff Woodcroft speaks on a letter sent to the Canadian Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Finance, regarding the timeliness of a Guaranteed Basic Income. This letter comes with the endorsement of bishops from coast to coast to coast, from both the Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.

In his opening reflections, Bishop Geoff refers to the a bold experiment from the 1970s called "Mincome," more information about which is available in this archived CBC piece. He also speaks of the role that former Senator Hugh Segal played in the development of this new letter, and a brief piece co-written by Mr. Segal is available here.

If you would like to read the text of the letter or might consider writing a letter to your own Member of Parliament, you can find that information on the Diocesan website. If you have questions or concerns about this initiative by the bishops, you can find the contact information for the diocese and its various officers on that same website.

  • For a Time Like This: Good Shepherd

With this coming Sunday, May 3/2020, marked as "Good Shepherd Sunday" we thought it a good time to share two songs based on Psalm 23, written and performed by people from the saint ben's circle. First up is "Shepherd of Life" by Steve Bell. Originally released on his 1989 album "Comfort My People," this is a new acoustic version just recently recorded as a gift to his listeners during these hard days of the global pandemic. The second song is "Bound Up" by Jenny Moore. This song was recorded for a 2007 album of seven songs which she recorded for us just prior to her move to the UK.

For the lyrics of the two songs, a video version of "Shepherd of Life," and to comment on this podcast, please visit the web post.
