  • One Step to Chicago-Featuring All Star Jazz Legends

Rivermont Records, a Virginia-based label that specializes in early jazz and ragtime, is proud to announce the premiere release of One Step to Chicago, a 14-track album that features an all-star lineup of jazz music legends. Recorded in 1992 and then laid aside until now, the album is the product of legendary producer George Avakian. Avakian brought three generations of jazz giants together in RCA’s New York studio to record the exciting music of Frank Teschemacher (a pioneering jazz clarinetist of the late 1920s) and the Austin High Gang. The album features a Who's Who of notable jazz instrumentalists, including pianist/arranger Dick Hyman, clarinetists Kenny Davern and Dan Levinson, guitarist Marty Grosz, Grammy-winning bass saxophonist Vince Giordano and nearly a dozen more.

Bryan Wright, the founder and executive producer of Rivermont, says about the album, “This extraordinary recording documents the once-in-a-lifetime meeting of so many jazz greats — all playing in top form and recorded in state-of-the-art sound under Avakian’s personal guidance. All-star bands don’t always work artistically, but here, the chemistry is palpable. The musicians blend beautifully and sound as if they are having the time of their lives.”

One Step to Chicago was released on July 15, 2022, in deluxe CD and vinyl packages.

  • A New Home-How Bosnian Refugees Made a Home in St. Louis

"A New Home" is an informative documentary that tells the story of the Bosnian refugees who fled to St. Louis in the early ’90s. It examines their impact on our community and offers a retrospective overview of the war and resulting genocide. The St. Louis area is home to more displaced Bosnians than any other city in the world — perhaps more than 75,000. This 30-year diaspora has benefited the metro area in a multiplicity of ways.

“A New Home” is director Joseph Puleo’s much-anticipated follow-up to his wildly popular “America’s Last Little Italy: The Hill,” which screened virtually during the 2020 editions of both the Showcase and the St. Louis International Film Festival.

  • Night Life-Hope and Love Amidst Violence and Addiction

"Night Life" is an inspiring documentary that tells the story of the Rev. Kenneth McKoy, known to St. Louis as the “Pastor of the Streets.” The Night Life Ministry, whose participants walk the streets of North St. Louis at night, fights an epidemic of mental illness and drug addiction, actively interrupting gun violence with McKoy’s motto: “Our love for our people and belief in our convictions is stronger than our own fear of death.”

Seth Ferranti vividly documents the North Side’s poverty and homelessness, its drug addicts and dealers, and its gangbangers and prostitutes; but Ferranti also reveals the seldom seen side filled with hope, love, consideration, and caring. This film is part of the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase.

  • Continuity: Expanding Diversity in Media Productions

The media industry is no exception when it comes to desiring a skilled and diverse workforce yet like numerous other companies, finding content creators, filmmakers, and crew members of different backgrounds, ethnicities, races, ages, identities, and neurodivergence can be quite challenging. To help meet this demand, Continuity, a St. Louis based non-profit, created one-day workshops to teach people the basic skills and networking they need to start working in the media industry. Its mission is to expand diversity in media production through skills-based training, mentorship, and opportunities for untapped talent.

On Saturday, June 11th, Continuity will be holding its second Set Basics Workshop at Spot Content Studio in south St Louis City. Jacob Kurtz discusses the workshop which is sponsored by the Missouri Film Office and provides 30 attendees an intense 10-hour day to learn set etiquette, how a film set works and how to find work. Attendance is by invitation only and those interested must submit an application online.

The Set Basics Workshop will be held in Kansas City in the Fall and offered again locally one more time before the end of the year. Continuity will continue offering the workshops in multiple cities in the years that follow with various dates projected in 2023.
