What does the man who recorded the Mardi Gras anthem Carnival Time, the man who played Mardi Gras Indian all his life, & the lady who danced her way into Carnival time, Mardi Gras Indian culture, & voodoo have in common? Well, friendship, for starters! 
In this episode of Everything New Orleans, I got together with three of my longtime friends and running partners: 
Al 'Carnival Time' Johnson, Spy Boy Ricky Gettridge, and Resa 'Cinnamon Black' Bazile. 
We had an enlightening and sometimes hilarious conversation about authenticity, culture, music, friendship, and Everything New Orleans.

Welcome to Episode Five of Everything New Orleans the Podcast,

where we talk about all kinds of things that come from my hometown, 

but mainly we focus on traditional New Orleans music.

Today we got started with two musicians born and raised in the city of New Orleans:

Roderick Paulin, the son of trumpeter Ernest Doc Paulin, 

who was the leader of the legendary Paulin Bros. Brass Band. 

Roderick is known for playing sax, and more recently, 

playing clarinet like his late brother Rickey.

And Mark Braud, son of Dwight and Joyce Braud- 

His mama’s brother is trumpeter Wendell Brunious, Mark’s uncle.

Mark is also the nephew of John Brunious, Jr., and grandson of John Brunious, Sr., all professional trumpet players. 

Later, we’re joined by drummer Herlin Riley, son of the late Betty Lastie Williams and a member of the Lastie musical family, including Frank, Walter, David, Melvin and Joe Lastie.

One of the things they have in common is that all three of them grew up in musical families, surrounded by traditional New Orleans music.

They grew up in 3 different families, but music made them all part of the family of musicians from the city of New Orleans.

Hi! I'm Sally Young! Welcome to my podcast EVERYTHING NEW ORLEANS!

Growing up in New Orleans was like no other experience on the planet. I always knew that there was no other place like it. 

As a teenager, I started working with the music that was the soundtrack of my youth. Professor Longhair, Earl King, Al Carnival Time Johnson. They became real people to me, not just voices I heard on records. 

I worked with a lot of Mardi Gras Indians, after seeing them on my way to my Nanaan’s apartment on the corner of St. Charles & Jackson on Mardi Gras Day. 

Then I got to ride in the Zulu parade a couple of times, passing that same corner where I stood on the neutral ground since I was a little kid every Mardi Gras morning. 

My life revolved around the music, food, and community spirit of New Orleans. 

That became my SERVICE and ultimately, my JOY.
