After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is BACK on television and streaming everywhere, and that means the oldest inter-league tournament in North American soccer starts this week. 

Among the early participants is Park City Red Wolves SC, the fourth-division debutant that qualified for the first round of the tournament by virtue of winning the Mountain division title in USL League Two last year. Led by second-year manager and academy director Scott Mackenzie, the Red Wolves will open the Open Cup at 8:30 p.m. MDT Wednesday night in Las Vegas against Eric Wynalda and the NPSL side Las Vegas Legends FC. 

The match will stream on ESPN+. 

Before the match, Mackenzie sat down with Salt City FC to discuss his new club, the Red Wolves' academy system, and what participating in the country's oldest inter-league national tournament means for an amateur club in Park City.

Is RSL goalkeeper David Ochoa the "biggest villain since Steven Lenhart"? Who knows, but we're all for it. The 20-year-old goalkeeper helped Real Salt Lake to a 2-1 win at Minnesota United FC in their season opener — but should we be talking more about a Minnesota side that is 0-2 with 6 goals-against and just 1 goal-for, instead of coach Adrian Heath's exception to Ochoa kicking a ball into the stands? 

The NCAA women's soccer tournament opened this week, and Utah Valley made history with a 1-0 win over Memphis. Then the guys turn west toward the LA Galaxy and the hot start of five goal-scorer Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez.

Sean Walker and Jake Hatch are back with another edition of the Salt City FC podcast for Week 2 of the 2021 Major League Soccer season. The guys opened the pod with a look back at Week 1 action in MLS and shared their takeaways from the full slate of games the played out over three days last weekend.

Attention then turned to the news du jour in the soccer world at-large with the proposed "Super League" being announced that failing in a matter of days. In their 2021 debut episode they began with the big news of former Real Salt Lake captain Kyle Beckerman taking the reins of the Utah Valley University men's soccer program as the second head coach all-time for the Wolverines. The guys shared their takes on the hire, what they think the learning curve will be like for Beckerman and what to expect from UVU moving forward now. 

Audio from Beckerman's introductory press conference was the feature of the second segment of the podcast as he laid out his vision for his new gig leading the Wolverines and why he was so interested in pursuing the position after hanging up his boots as a player this past offseason. (17:14)

Finally, Sean and Jake got listeners ready for the first weekend of MLS action as the 2021 season begins later this week, albeit with Real Salt Lake on a bye.
