Due to extreme weather conditions and low temperatures, many Salvation Army warming shelters, especially in the northeast, are now running on a 24-hour basis.
In many counties, The Salvation Army has partnered with transportation services who will provide free transportation to riders who indicate they are traveling to a cold weather shelter.
As temperatures reach life-threatening lows, many locations are now in urgent need of volunteers to keep these shelters running.
Volunteers are needed to help for 3-hour time frames to serve hot beverages, food and supplies to locals experiencing homelessness and retreating to these warming shelters to escape the cold.
The Salvation Army annually helps more than 30 million Americans overcome poverty, addiction, and economic hardships through a range of social services. By providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, rehabilitation for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, and clothing and shelter for people in need, The Salvation Army is doing the most good at over 7,000 centers of operation around the country.
